Today’s flower is the beautiful penstemon, “Garnet”. I learned to day that penstemons are the same family as foxgloves, which they do resemble. I have grown several different varieties over the years including “Sour Grapes”, my favourite, but only Garnet resolutely survives the worst of the winter and recent hot dry summers without failing. I have found it easy to propagate from cuttings and have several clumps of it in various places around the garden. It does tend to be a bit sprawly, like yesterday’s geranium, but there’s nothing wrong with sprawly in the right place!
